GLEN BURNIE, Md. — The University of Maryland Eastern Shore baseball team was swept in a series with Coppin State University on Friday, losing 3-1 in the first game and 3-0 in the second.
In defeat, the Hawks (6-25, 4-8 MEAC) had valiant pitching efforts. Seniors Evan Bertone (Douglas, Massachusetts) and Toby Hoskins (North East, Maryland) started the games and threw five innings each, but were given the losses. Sophomore Andre Bell (Detroit, Michigan) and senior Chris Melrath (Rising Sun, Maryland) came in for relief without allowing any runs.
The Eagles (11-15-1, 10-2 MEAC) won the season series 5-1 against the Hawks after giving up nine total hits in the two games.
Jamison Trower (Chesterfield, Virginia), Eastern Shore senior, had two hits in the first game.
The only run the Hawks scored on Friday was in the seventh inning, where two errors by Coppin State allowed a runner home without a hit. The bases were loaded for the Hawks in the eighth inning until a double play ended the hopes of another run.
Only four hits were allowed by Coppin State’s Jahmon Taylor and Corey Treyes in the second game shutout. Eastern Shore loaded the bases with only one out in the fifth inning, only to end with a popup and a ground out.
The next games for the Hawks include a doubleheader with Mount St. Mary’s on Tuesday, beginning at 1 p.m. at Straw Family Stadium in Emmitsburg.
