NORFOLK, Va. — The University of Maryland Eastern Shore baseball team took the final game of its series with Norfolk State 8-2 on Sunday.
Leading the way for the Hawks were Dominic DeBlasie (Tilton, N.H.) who hit a home run in the ninth, and senior pitcher Toby Hoskins (North East, Md.) who had a complete game in the win.
The win brings the Hawks’ record to 8-28 (5-10 MEAC), while the Spartans drop to 12-20 (9-6 MEAC).
Freshman Avery Tunnell (Dover, De.) had three hits and scored two runs to lead the offense for the Hawks. Junior Joey Nicastro (New Market, Md.) also had multiple hits and one RBI.
Hoskins allowed only one hit after the fourth inning and had seven strikeouts in his complete game, giving him his fourth win of the season.
Lead off batter Tyler Friis (Appleton, Wi.) hit a double and later scored from a sacrifice bunt. The Hawks took a 2-0 lead over the Spartans in the first after a sacrifice fly from sophomore Dwayne Marshall (Piscataway, N.J.).
The Spartans tied the game in the fourth after runs in consecutive innings. The Hawks would score again in the sixth, when DeBlasie gave them the lead on an error after his double. A sacrifice bunt from Nicastro scored a third run after freshman Dillon Oxyer (Pasadena, Md.) drew a walk to load the bases.
The two-run homer by DeBlasie and an RBI single by senior Isaiah Chambers (Bowie, Md.) put the game away for the Hawks.
UMES will be visiting Towson and Dover this week, with the next home game coming against Delaware State this coming Sunday.
