College Park, MD – Twice in the Maryland 3A Boys High School Basketball Championship Game, Stephen Decatur had the ball with time running down and a chance to win a title. The ball was in the hands of their leading scorer Torrey Brittingham. As the fourth quarter neared its conclusion Brittingham set up Darion McKenzie with a jumper that struck iron and missed. The game went into overtime where with seconds remaining, Brittingham dribbling, was about to make his move. That is when C.M. Wright’s Chris Lorenzo stole the ball, raced down the court. His layup sent Decatur to a heartbreaking 51-49 loss.
It ended a quest for the school’s first state title in 46 years. Stephen Decatur finishes the season 23-3.
After the game, Lorenzo said he knew Brittingham would attempt a cross dribble move based on scouting reports the team had on Decatur.
