Newark, DE – The last men’s college basketball opening in Division I is now filled. On Tuesday, the University of Delaware announced that Notre Dame Assistant Martin Ingelsby will be the next Blue Hens head coach.
Ingelsby has been an assistant on former Delaware Head Coach Mike Brey’s Fighting Irish staff for the past seven seasons. Ingelsby has a large rebuilding project ahead of him. There are currently only nine scholarship players on the Hens’ roster. Five of those recently asked to be released, allowing them to transfer to another school.
Ingelsby’s bio on the Notre Dame website credits him for “elevating program’s national recruiting efforts.” It is a skill he likely will need. Last year, Delaware delayed making a decision about the future of former coach Monte Ross. Eventually Ross was re-signed but not before the loss of potential high school recruits. With the two month delay in naming Ross’ replacement, Delaware again has lost another recruiting class.
