Interview of the Week – Salisbury Basketball Coach Andrew Sachs

May 31, 2016 Posted by Matt Pencek Featured Sports, Sports Interview Of The Week
The basketball off-season is normally a time when players participate in summer leagues and camps to sharpen their skills for the next campaign.  Salisbury University Mens Basketball Coach has that approach in mind.  Recently he shared his thoughts on his team and his upcoming camp.
Pencek:  It has been two months, have you gotten over the loss in the NCAA Tournament?

Sachs: Yes…we have all moved on…unfortunately in a tournament setting all teams end up losing except one.  We have learned from our mistakes and the program is moving forward, but without Wyatt (Smith) we had a year the university and our supporters can be proud

Pencek:  What were your parting words to the team as you concluded the 2016 season?

Sachs: We need to get better if we want to advance past the first weekend.  Our six seniors helped keep the program moving forward and everyone coming must get better or we don’t get better.  We have a chance to leave a legacy after this season (16-17) and make three consecutive NCAA tourney appearances which has never been done in the history of the program, but we need to get deeper in the tourney.
Pencek: You’re keeping busy this summer with your basketball camp, what is your motivation for hosting it?

Sachs: We want to be a part of the fabric of the Delmarva community.  Spreading the love of basketball and teaching young children how to get better, enjoy this great game and learn to compete is part of that.

Pencek: Are there aspects to this camp that are unique?

Sachs: We really have two different camps.  The 24-26 is our shooting camp, we will focus on the fundamentals of shooting and work with kids on how to shoot coming off screens, off the dribble, post shots, etc…the 26-29 we will encompass all basketball skills in addition with game play.  campers have the choice of doing day camp or stay overnight.  We want to teach kids how to get better and enjoy this great game.

Pencek: I noticed some of your players are assisting, did yiou have to twist any arms for that help (lol)?

Sachs: I will have many of our players working camp, including some of the newcomers coming into the program that have already deposited for the fall.  Most of them wanted to work the camps…some are doing internships this summer and can’t.  We were in the schools in the fall reading to young elementary school students our guys love working with kids.  We have a team that visibly cares about each other, the basketball program and the university.  Campers will see that family atmosphere at the camp
Pencek: Other than the camp what is your schedule like during the off season.

Sachs: There is no of-season for coaches…I will take a couple of weekends to re-charge and see family ….but We will continue to try and get the program better everyday.  Recruiting will be a big part of that, July is the busiest month for that with AAU tournaments in the mid-Atlantic region..but we will always have on-campus visits during the summer…scheduling and making travel plans for the season are also Done over the Summer… and we have finalized our schedule for next year we are just waiting for some contracts to come in and the 17-18 schedule is pretty much done too I just need one more game.  We will continue to work on fund raising ideas and we will also be organizing the 25 year reunion of the ’91&’92 teams for homecoming which the ’92 team was the best in school history and I was privileged to be the assistant with coach lambert on those teams.  Our guys have the strength and conditioning program to work on and they will be working to get better too.
