COLLEGE PARK, Md.– One of college football’s best defensive backs is a Maryland Terrapin. At the start of the 2016 season, the eyes of the national media will be focused on William Likely. On Monday, Likely was named to the Jim Thorpe Award watch list. The Thorpe award is presented annually to the top defensive back.
Likely’s inclusion on the list is not surprising to the Big Ten. He has been named First Team All-Big Ten as a defensive back each of the last two years. In 2015, Likely registered 44 tackles, four tackles for loss, three forced fumbles, and led the team with 11 pass breakups.
The Thorpe Award Winner is selected from three finalists and will be announced at College Football Awards on Thursday, Dec. 8.
Likely and the Terps open the season Saturday, Sept. 3 when they host FCS member Howard.
