Salisbury’s Chernoff to Work Corner of WBA Fight

June 23, 2016 Posted by Matt Pencek Featured Sports, Local Sports, National Sports

BROOKLYN, NY – Hal Chernoff has seen WBA welterweight Shawn Porter work his way from amateur fighter to world champion.

Chernoff, the head coach at Salisbury’s Main Street Gym, will have a great vantage point for Porter’s Saturday night bout with undefeated Keith Thurman. In a conversation this week, Chernoff informed WBOC that he will be the “cutman” in Porter’s corner.

When Chernoff was training Fernando Guerrero, there were many interactions with Porter during the early part of both of their careers. Guerroro defeated Porter in the 2007 Golden Gloves and U.S. Championship. A relationship was formed with Porter during that period in his development. It was because of Chernoff that Porter made his pro debut at the Wicomico Youth & Civic Center, an October 2008 TKO of Norman Johnson.

Porter’s fight at Brooklyn’s Barclay Center on Saturday June 25 can been seen on WBOC. Coverage begins at 9 p.m.
