Stand Up Paddleboard or SUP has been part of the water scene on Delmarva for more than 10 years. On Sunday at Assateague Island State Park, the sport will be featured in the inaugural East Coast Sup Surf Championship.
Walk On Water is coordinating the competition. Co-owner of the business, Ron Gossard, is expecting between 25 – 45 participants. Because of the growing popularity of the SUP, Gossard thought it was time to start a championship event. “We’re all paddle boarders and surfers and we love to go out ourselves. There is not really a SUP contest around here,” he said.
The participants will be grouped into three divisions (men’s, women’s, and 14 under).
