CAMBRIDGE, Md.- When wrestling season starts on Nov 15, all of the hard work, dedication, and sweat the participating high school students have put in all season leads toward these final three weekends.
It all starts with the Bayside Conference tournament, which will be held at Cambridge-South Dorchester High School on Friday, Feb 16 and Saturday, Feb 17, starting at 4 p.m. on Friday and 9 a.m. on Saturday.
This tournament is the first opportunity these young athletes will have to show their skills on the mat in front of every team in the conference from Kent Island to Stephen Decatur in Berlin. These high school athletes will be competing not only for their own individual records, but for a team score as well.
Leading up to the tournament, the favorite teams are North Caroline High and Stephen Decatur High. These Bayside powerhouses will actually face off in a duel at 5 p.m. this Wednesda, Jan 31, at Stephen Decatur High School.
Both teams are coming into this match undefeated, as well as ranked in the top 25 teams overall in the state. This battle for the number one spot should come down to the final matches of the evening.
Following North Caroline and Stephen Decatur are James M. Bennett and Queen Anne’s high schools. The other attending schools will be Snow Hill, Parkside, Cambridge South-Dorchester, Easton, St. Michaels, North Dorchester, Colonel Richardson, Kent Island, Kent County, Wicomico, and Mardela.
Within the Bayside conference there are at least 23 wrestlers who are ranked in the state of Maryland’s top 25 wrestlers for each weight class.
From the district tournament, the top 4 placers in each weight class are granted a spot in the 4A/3A or 2A/1A East Regional Tournaments. A few other wrestlers that earned enough seed points by winning throughout the season will make it to this tournament as well.
The 4A/3A East Regional will be held at Severna Park High School and the 2A/1A East Regional will be held at Snow Hill High School on Friday Feb 23 and Saturday Feb 24. The top wrestlers from the Bayside Conference will be placed into brackets with the top wrestlers from the Upper Chesapeake Conference.
This time, the top 4 placers in each weight class of regions will have earned a spot in the Maryland State Wrestling Tournament, which will take place Friday, March 2 and Saturday, March 3, at the Showplace Arena in Upper Marlboro, Maryland.
