NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Gabbie Nieves scored the first two goals of the second half to break a 5-5 tie in leading fourth ranked Salisbury to a 13-6 win at number 15 Christopher Newport.
The Sea Gulls opened the scoring just over a minute into the first half, Nieves was able to get free in the middle and fire in a shot just outside the fan to go up 1-0.
For the next seven minutes, neither team was able to find the back of the net, and the Sea Gull defense held strong as sophomore goalkeeper Gianna Falcone made a big one-on-one save at 25:03, when Catie Chess took a shot just outside the crease, to keep Christopher Newport off the board.
Four minutes later, Nieves found the back of the cage for the second time on the day after taking a ball from senior Megan Wallenhorst and finishing past the Captains’ goalkeeper, Emma Walsh.
The win improves Salisbury’s record to 12-1 overall and 6-0 in CAC play.
